How we count US gym chain locations

We use the same rules for all four gym chains: identify the brand, check the business category, remove duplicates and count clubs by state.

  • This edition shows club counts on one extraction date. Measuring openings and closures requires comparing multiple editions.
  • Downloads contain state totals. Individual addresses and contact details are not included.

This study counts clubs identified as Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Crunch Fitness or LA Fitness across the 50 states and the District of Columbia, including Alaska and Hawaii. It does not estimate the total number of gyms in the United States. Independent gyms and other chains are outside its scope.

We identify clubs by their business name or an official brand website, then check the recorded business categories. A matching website can recover a club whose recorded name is incomplete. Transport stops, swim schools, therapy providers, corporate offices and other businesses operating inside gyms are excluded.

We remove duplicate records that share an individual official club page or club ID. We also compare standardized addresses and coordinates, with a state-and-city fallback when coordinates are missing. When records conflict, the most recently observed record is considered first. A shared brand homepage alone never makes two clubs duplicates.

Permanently closed records and listings excluded from public display are excluded. Temporarily closed clubs remain in the totals and are reported separately. Use the official club directory for current opening hours.

Only locations assigned to one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia enter the geographic totals. Territories and records without a usable state are outside those totals. State tables count clubs, not memberships, floor area or revenue.

The source list includes official club directories. Use them to find individual club addresses, facilities and current opening hours.

LA Fitness is treated as a brand, not as the complete Fitness International portfolio. Records explicitly named Esporta or Club Studio are excluded. Crunch Fitness and Crunch Signature locations are combined under Crunch when they meet the same gym and geographic rules.
