What the numbers show

Ohio and Texas share the lead

Together, Ohio and Texas account for 412 stores, or 32.4% of the Kroger total. Georgia follows with 172.

Kroger stores, not every Kroger-owned chain

Ralphs, Fred Meyer and King Soopers belong to the same parent company but are excluded. This study counts stores using the Kroger name.

Sources and method

50 states and Washington, DC · Territories excluded

  • The total includes 2 temporarily closed stores.
  • Fuel centers, pharmacies, delivery facilities and in-store departments do not count as separate Kroger stores.

We identify stores through their business name or an official website domain, then check the recorded business categories. A website match alone does not turn a pharmacy, warehouse or delivery hub into a grocery store.

Departments and services are removed before counting: pharmacies, fuel stations, bakeries, delis, ATMs, garden centers, pickup points and similar listings. Kroger means stores using the Kroger name; Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers and other sister brands are outside this edition. Sam’s Club is also excluded.

Duplicate checks use official store identities where available, including Publix store-number links and ALDI’s current and legacy locator paths. They also compare standardized street addresses within the same city and state, and same-brand locations less than 60 meters apart. Locations with different store IDs are kept separate even when they are close together.

The geographic scope is the 50 states and Washington, DC, including Alaska and Hawaii. State assignment comes from the source location record. Missing assignments and territories are excluded from the mapped total.

Permanently closed listings and those excluded from public display are excluded. Explicitly labeled future openings are excluded. Temporarily closed stores remain included and are counted separately. Some listings may still describe planned openings or closures that their source has not updated.

The source list includes official store directories and company information. Use the store directories to find individual locations and current opening hours.

Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets are separated using explicit format names. Locations without either format label are grouped as “Other Walmart stores.” Counts measure stores, not floor space or the size of the grocery selection.
